As per Time magazine, if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wins in the upcoming election and Narendra Modi becomes India’s next Prime Minister, the atmosphere between India and the US may become more tense which is already charged up following visa controversy involving Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade.
What is the issue between Narendra Modi and USA?
In 2005, the US State Department revoked Narendra Modi’s visa because of his alleged role in Gujarat riots in February 2002. There is an American law that bars visit of a foreign official who is responsible for or directly carried out particularly severe violations of religious freedom. But with Modi in the fray for the post of Prime Minister, the US appears to be in a quandary whether to allow him the visa or not. However, in the eventuality of Modi becoming India’s PM, the US will have to soften its stance otherwise it will be detrimental for the ties between the two nations.
