Indian-American AJ Paulraj wins Marconi Prize 2014

Indian-American scientist AJ Paulraj has been honoured with the Marconi Prize 2014 for developing the theory and applications of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology. The prestigious award, often called the Nobel equivalent for technology world, carries a cash prize of $100,000.
Why?
  • He discovered that using multiple antennas at both the transmitting and receiving stations can increase the delivery speed of multimedia content through wireless broadband services by manifold.
  • It is this technology that has made possible the advent and success of current high speed WiFi and 4G mobile communication systems.
  • Every wifi router and 4G phone which we use today owe its success to this very invention.
About
  • He is at present a Professor (Emeritus) at Stanford University.
  • He before migrating to US, thanks to the infamous Brain-Drain syndrome, was an electrical engineer for the Indian Navy.

    • Also known as “Tech Nobel”
    • Founded: 1974 by Guglielmo Marconi’s daughter Gioia Marconi Braga to mark the centennial of her father’s birth and memorialize his spirit of ingenuity in service to humanity. (He was the radio inventor).

    • The society is celebrating its 50th year in 2014. 
India at the Awards
  • Acclaimed scientist and educator Yash Pal is the sole Indian citizen to have ever won this prestigious recognition.
  • He did that in 1980 when he was recognized for pioneering modern communications technology to meet the needs of isolated rural villagers in India.
