The 2013/14 Education for All Global Monitoring Report

37 per cent of the global illiterate adults, the most in the world, reside in India as per a report released by UNESCO. The report estimates the total number of illiterate adults in India around 287 million simultaneously presenting a stark inequality that exist in education levels of the country's rich and poor.
Why
  • The report has been prepared to assess the progress on the six 'Dakar Education for All' campaign goals that was adopted in World Education Forum held at Dakar (Senegal) in 2000.
Highlights
Goal 1:
  • Early childhood and care is still in very poor condition.
  • Only half of young children have access to pre-primary education.
Goal 2:
  • 57 million children are out of school as per a 2011 figure.
  • 23% of poor girls in rural areas completed primary education.
  • If the trend continues the richest boys will achieve complete literacy by 2021 while poorest girls will take at least 6 decades more for the same.
Goal 3:
  • Many adolescents lack foundation skills acquired through lower secondary education.
Goal 4:
  • Adult illiteracy has declined just by a percent since 2000 and now stands at 774 million.
  • Almost two-thirds of them are women.
Goal 5:
  • Only 60% countries have achieved gender parity in primary education, the figure is meagre 38 percent for secondary education.
Goal 6:
  • Poor quality of education has cost the world around $129 billion. 
  • 250 children lack basic skills despite spending years in school.
