- Union Cabinet on 2 March 2014 cleared reservation for Jat community under the central list of OBC (other backward castes quota) category in nine northern states.
- This move of the cabinet will benefit to about nine crore people of the community.
- This decision will also help Jats to avail benefits of reservation in central government jobs and in the central education institutions as per existing norms.
- This decision of the Cabinet, the Jat community will be included under the the Central list of OBCs for the states like Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarrakhand, Uttar Pradesh and the National capital territory of Delhi will include the Jat community.
- Earlier on 30 January 2014, the Union Cabinet approved amendments to the Central List of Other Backward Classes to include or delete 115 castes in the list from 13 States and 3 Union Territories.
- The amendments were approved following the proposals received by different states.
- The changes in the List of OBCs were approved following the advices received by the National Commission for Backward Classes.
National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC)
- Pursuant to the direction of the Supreme Court in the Mandal case judgement, the Government of India enacted the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993 for setting up a National Commission for Backward Classes at the Centre as a permanent body.
- The Act came into effect on the 2 April 1993.
