Explain the significance of Bengal School of Art in the modern Indian art movement in Indian painting. (200 Words)

In the last quarter of nineteenth century, when declining Modern Indian art, with negligible glimpses of past ,was seeing an upsurge from western influence of Naturalism, by artists such as Raja Ravi Varma. Neither did british schools promoted traditional rich Indian culture. In response to this, the Bengali School of Art came in as renaissance and revivalist of Indian Art. It originated in Bengal and spread throughout India in early 20th century, also associated with Indian nationalism. Promoted by Avindranath Tagore, it injected new vigour and direction to Modern Indian Art.
It served Painting as an inspired and well intentioned link with the glorious past of India. Tagore’s paintings also had a Mughal influence, expressive of India’s distinct spiritualism, in contrary to West’s materialism. Tagore also painted ‘Bharat Mata’, depicted as a young woman, like a Hindu Goddess, with four arms, holding objects with India’s national aspirations.
Although Bengali school of Art declined by 1940s, and did not had much larger impact on contemporary Modern Indian Art, but still its methodology and techniques were followed . Nevertheless, it provided a major launching space for other arts using its concept of form and content both. Hence it had a great significance in Modern Indian Art movement in Indian painting.
