Sikkim Assembly okays Lokayukta bill


  • The State Legislative Assembly of Sikkim on 26 February 2014 unanimously passed the Sikkim Lokayukta Bill-2014 during the eighth assembly’s ninth session (Part III).
  • The bill aimed at providing transparent and corruption free governance in the state, will allow people to file petition against any corrupt individual ranging from Chief Minister to the Panchayat or chief Secretary to peon.
  • The chief minister said the state government has always been in favour of the bill as it will benefit people at large. 
  • It shall be applicable to all public servants of Sikkim, serving in and outside the state and under the control of the state government. 
  • The bill will now be sent to the Governor and the President for their respective approvals.

  • The new Lokayukta will have the power to inquire into and investigate allegations of corruption against public functionaries, including former chief ministers and the incumbent, ministers and former ministers, MLAs and former MLAs and government officials of all grades.
  • With the passing of the bill, Sikkim has become the third state after Uttarakhand and Odisha to enact a law for the creation of a Lokayukta. The Speaker expressed his gratitude to the house for the smooth passage of the session.
