(Q) The winter rains In North India are largely related to Jet Streams and Western Disturbances. Bring out the relationship. (About 150 words,IAS-2008)
Ans.
  • Jet Streams principle is the latest concept about the origin of monsoon.
  • It is based on Jet Streams found in lowermost atmospheric layer, extending from about 8 km at the poles and 16 km at equator.
  • The period of the retreating monsoon is from mid September to mid December.
  • It marks transitional weather conditions between hot-wet and cool-dry weather.
  • Due to westerly Jet-Stream, cyclonic rainfall is experienced in October.
  • North India receives less rainfall from these Jet Stream compared to the Coromandal Coast (Tamil Nadu) due to exclusive local relief factors.
  • The south-westerly winds gradually retreat.
  •  Violent tropical cyclone is also formed in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
  •  It causes great destruction in Godavari and Krishna deltaic region.
  •  Troposphere is a perfect place for the activities of Jet Streams due to all phenomenon of weather and climate which physically affect men take-place within this layer.
  • Troposphere contains water vapour which mixes perfectly with air and its various proportion gives rise to the different phenomenon like rain, Snow hail or sleet.
  •  So, Jet Streams have an important role in the weather changes.
