Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration confers on M S Swaminathan


M S Swaminathan, eminent agricultural scientist, will be conferred the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for the year 2012. The award, consisting of a citation and five lakh rupees, will be presented to the 88-year-old scientist at a function in New Delhi on 31st of October, marking the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi.

Some of the previous recipients of the award are Aruna Asaf Ali, P N Haksar, M S Subbulakshmi, Rajiv Gandhi, A P J Abdul Kalam and Shankar Dayal Sharma.

A plant geneticist by training, Prof. Swaminathan's contributions to the agricultural renaissance in the country have led to his being widely referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement.
